If you’re feeling a little more like walking on the mystical side this year for your Halloween party, consider having a mystical themed Halloween party that will engage your guests on a whole new level by inviting them inside a mystical world of magic and mystery.
Creating a mystical event begins with creating an environment that helps the guests feel as though they have stepped out of their regular everyday lives and into a mystical reality. How do we do that? We begin by looking at how we can modify the event environment to engage as many of the guests’ senses as possible. Think about a nightclub in Las Vegas and how when you walk into one of the higher-end clubs like Tao, which has a mystical Buddha Focus, they engage your senses in many ways by providing dim lighting, mystical end table settings and food from around the world which creates a different type of environment then people are typically used to.
Before we begin first you’ll want to decide on a mystical theme for your event. This can range from Victorian Era Psychic Parlor to a Witch and Wizard or a Renaissance style theme or anything that has an air of mystique to it. The decorations for the theme of the event is something that your guests will see the moment they walk through the door and will help them transcend their everyday life and immediately feel as though they have stepped into another reality, a reality that I like to call the Mystical Zone. As you read through the following tips, keep in mind the era that you are looking at embodying with your theme and try to stick with types of activities and event decorations that really speak to the era that your theme takes place in. For instance, if you have a Victorian Era Psychic Parlor type party, you’ll want to keep your eyes open for some old fashioned candle holders or lamps that can help you to really set the stage quickly 4 your mystical event. And PS, you can do this on the cheap by checking out your local thrift stores.
Since I began producing parties, special events and conferences at a variety of nightclubs and venues in 2002, (like Aria Las Vegas, Jackpot Junction Hotel & Casino, Muse Event Center, St. Paul Winter Carnival & more) I have learned the do’s and don’ts of how to create a mystical event throughout the years, so here are 7 of my top tips to help you create a mystical party of your own that your guests will remember for a lifetime.
7 Tips For Creating A Mystical Halloween Party:
1. Mystical lighting. Lighting at an event setting or party is the quickest way to change the mood. So turn off those bright lights and consider getting some fairy lights which are typically small little lights on a copper wire that can either plug in or I love the battery operated ones because you can take them anywhere and don’t have to rely on a plug-in being there. Shaped hanging lights like Moon or Starlights to place around the event environment also help to add a sense of Mystery to your lighting scheme. You can place these lights throughout the event area by either hanging them on the ceiling or on walls or you can also create small seating and table areas that people can sit at and have a mystically lit table arrangement greet them. In a pinch or if you’re on a low budget you can always use holiday tree lights as well.
2. Mystical Draperies, Fabric and Tablecloths. Another fun and easy way to help your event environment transform into a magical mystical reality is by having mystical tablecloths and fabric draping in a variety of places in your event environment. Now you might be thinking how does a tablecloth get classified as a mystical tablecloth? Well a great technique that we use at WildFlower Mystical Entertainment and our Party Psychics division, is to use fancier tablecloths than most people use on a regular basis and we place pretty scarves on top of the tablecloths as well to help create a layered effect. This layered effect helps to create more of a mystical gypsy vibe. The same thing goes for hanging fabrics in different areas of the event space as well as mystical curtains hanging in a variety of different areas to create little seating alcoves and such. Sheer fabric tends to work best if you’re going to be hanging fabric between different areas as it is partially see-through which adds a little more mystery. You can hang fabric on the edge of a table, between rooms or simply on the ceiling. If you look at many upscale event centers, many of them have some type of mystical lighting hanging from the ceiling as well as sheer see-through fabric hanging from the ceiling. It is such a simple thing to do, but as the upscale event centers no, sometimes the simplest things that you do to an environment can create the greatest impact on the energy of an environment.
3. Mystical Table Centerpieces and Table Scatter. When it comes to the tables, think outside the box and look into the crystal ball 🙂 Having an authentic crystal ball or even a light up battery operated faux crystal ball can be a wonderful way to add a touch of mystery to your table settings. You can also get some of those pre-cut foam stars in the kids craft section at the store and spray paint them gold and place them out on the tables as well. And you know those little glass gems that everyone uses for putting in vases that you can get at the dollar store? Well you can use those on the tables as well as straight as is or you can paint them with a variety of different painting techniques to create little mystical gems that you can even give to your guests as party favors. You simply scatter these out on the tables and the way that they will shimmer and shine in the light especially when you have a dimly-lit or mystically lit environment is amazing it helps to give some texture to the tables. You can also get some mirrors and arrange those on tables with candle holders on top of the mirrors. The real key here is creating something that is going to make people want to look at it because it’s different than what they see in their everyday life and that is really the key to keep in mind when you are creating a mystical environment.
4. Mystical Gypsy Tents. You can create your own mystical Gypsy tent by taking a regular sun tent or screen tent that you would use in the backyard or for camping and place it in your event environment then hang mystical looking mismatched curtains with different fabrics and textures to create a gypsy like feel. A fantastic place to get curtains with all different types of fabrics and textures and colors is at the thrift stores. Because you can find such a different variety of items at the thrift stores, they tend to be a really great resource when you are intentionally trying to create an environment that has multiple fabrics colors and textures. You can choose to go with one particular color scheme, like we have our Purple Aurora Mystical Gypsy Tent (as pictured) and the main color is purple but we also incorporates some deep blues and teal green every so often to help brighten it up. Or you can choose to make it total Gypsy style and intentionally use mismatched curtains and items to help create a different type of visually stimulating environment. I also recommend putting some pretty long hanging tassels in the front of your Gypsy tent so that you can tie back the front curtains. It really just helps to add another Touch of mystery to have big long tassels tying back the curtains! If you are up to the task you could even go all out like we did and make yourself a Bohemian Gypsy tent entrance by cutting up strips of fabric and ribbons and tying them onto a piece of rope and hanging it from the top of your tent for people to walk through on their way in. Now this can take quite some time to develop an elaborate one so if you are feeling the urge to create your own you can find resources for how to make fabric hanging banners on YouTube. Our first one took us about three weeks to develop and create, but hours are quite elaborate so if you want to keep it simple it could take you a lot less time to create yours. You can also purchase them on Etsy, the larger ones average about 1 to $200 or you could make it yourself for a lot less by using scraps of fabric that you have around the house or by purchasing remnant fabric that you can find in the clearance section at fabric stores. Now these mystical tents can be used if you have mystical providers like fortune tellers or henna painters and you can have them providing their services from inside of the tent. Or you can use these mystical gypsy tents to create different seating environments in your event space as well.
5. Mystical Party Gifts. You can create or purchase mystical party gifts that your guests will treasure for a lifetime. A few of our favorite mystical gifts to give to our guests is wizard wands, fairy wands and homemade tarot cards. If you are tight on time and would rather purchase a mystical type of gift for your guests consider gifting things like healing gemstones, books about chakras or yoga, meditation stones, elegant candle holders or vases and the like. On the other hand if you have some time on your hands to create a homemade mystical gift, it can be a wonderful way to add a personal touch to your party. You can create your own Wizard Wands or Fairy Wands using a few really simple items like chopsticks a hot glue gun, paint and fabric. There are some really great tutorials on YouTube about how to create wands out of these materials, so check them out if you’re interested in learning how to create them yourself. We wanted more than just the usual Wizard Wands, so we added a special little touch by adding glitter, lighter paints and ribbons to create Fairy Wands as well. You can also create homemade tarot cards by printing out photos that you have taken and placing them on index cards and painting or coloring on either a corresponding tarot value such as knight of wands or queen of swords or you can simply create an inspiration oracle deck that simply has one inspirational word on each card. If you would like to let your guests create their own, a mystical art activity corner at your event can be a wonderful way to help engage people of all ages from children to adults to have fun creating a piece of art that they’re going to take with them and get to know people who are spending time at the activity area as well.
6. Mystical Appetizers and Beverages. How awesome would it be to have a beverage and snack station with items that people don’t typically see on a everyday basis like orange blossom water or rose water mixed with Pellegrino sparkling water and with other a touch of pineapple or lime juice? You could even give these drink mixes mystical names like pink fairy blush or blueberry fairy potion and use blueberry juice to make it blue. Or if you have Harry Potter fans around you can even find recipes on YouTube to make your own butterbeer using ice cream, milk and butterscotch topping with of course whip cream on the top. For appetizers and snacks, think outside the box and provide items that have an international flare to them like items that you might find at a luau in Hawaii or at the street vendors in Vietnam. Providing something that is different than what people find every day is a big part of creating a mystical atmosphere for your event environment.
7. Hire a Professional Party Psychic, Mystical Body Art Provider or Fire Dancers.
